SITTING at a corner where Basilan is sharing table with fellow expansion squad Davao Occidental, a familiar face was spotted.
Clad in a yellow polo shirt was Jojo Tangkay, the former PBA player, who was making a comeback in the regional basketball league.
The 6-foot-1 Tangkay will be seeing action for Basilan, one among the expansion teams seeing action in the southern division of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball Legaue.
Almost 12 years after retiring from the PBA, Tangkay has spent his years playing “Ligang Labas”, or in a basketball parlance, means competing in minor leagues and being paid per game. He looks forward to playing in mainstream cage scene again.
“Parang nabuhay ulit yung basketball career ko,” Tangkay told FOX Sports Philippines.
According to Tagnkay, playing in “Ligang Labas” has kept himself in shape through the years. That’s why when MPBL commissioner Kenneth Duremdes came over to greet him, the former MVP couldn’t help but be impressed with his physique.
“Nakakaingit ka naman. Kita mo may abs ka pa rin,” Duremdes said in jest.
Life after the PBA wasn’t easy for Tangkay, who had to scrounge for a league to play for just to earn a living.
“Dati, kung saan-saan lang tayo naglalaro,” added Tangkay. “Ngayon, masaya ako makakalaro ulit, mas maganda may MPBL.”
For Tangkay, playing in a league like the MPBL poses a new challenge to his basketball skills.
“Mas maganda itong MPBL, ang daming teams, mraming bago, mga bata. Sana lang makasabay ako sa kanila,” he added.
