Top moments in Day 1 of the FIBA 3×3 World Cup

BOCAUE – There was definitely no shortage of highlights in Day 1 of the FIBA 3×3 World Cup at the Philippine Arena, with a total of 13 teams from Pools B and D picking up wins.

Six teams won their first two matches. In the Men’s division, Latvia (4), Poland (7), Estonia (10) and Croatia stayed unscathed, while China (1) and Spain (12) scored impressive victories.

Here are some of the highlights.

Polish Kobe?
Michael Hicks led the attack for Poland as they took care of business in Day 1. He led all scorers with 18 points after pouring nine each in the team’s wins against Indonesia and Slovenia.

But most importantly, he showed off a shooting stroke that was reminiscent of Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. Don’t tell me you don’t agree.

China breaks Swiss’ hearts in the clutch
The top women’s 3×3 squad was up by 19-11 at one point, but Switzerland mounted a comeback and even took the lead, 20-19, after a bucket from Nancy Fora.

Li YingYun, however, made sure that there wouldn’t be an upset and darted to the corner to receive the quick inbound and knock down a two-pointer for the win.

Block of the day – Jaan Puidet, Estonia
Estonia decisively beat Japan, 17-11, and really didn’t give any easy buckets – they held their opponents to just 10-of-32 shooting for the game.

This block was basically the summary of the action.

Palomares stars for Spain
Perlas Pilipinas might have a difficult time picking up a win against Spain, who have dazzled so far behind Paula Palomares. She’s leading the team in scoring and made twos.
