Pasig, Manila interested to get David as tug-of-war for veteran shooter looms

It appears Gary David may not be on board the Pirates’ ship just yet.

Negotiations between Pasig Pirates and the former PBA scoring champion has reportedly stalled with less than two months to go before the second conference of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL). Sources said that a virtual tug-of-war for the services of “El Granda” has ensued between Pasig and the Manila Stars, a fellow expansion team.

FOX Sports Philippines first broke the story last Saturday regarding David’s transfer from his hometown team, the Bataan Defenders, to Pasig.

Talks between David and the Pasig Pirates, headed by team owner James Anton Machate, initially had the former Gilas 2.0 stalwart jumping to the expansion team’s lair.

“Under negotiation pa. Sabay kasi kami ng Manila na interesado sa kanya”, said the youthful Pirates team owner in a brief chat with FOX Sports Philippines.

Jojo Lastimosa, the incoming head coach of Bataan, said that the veteran cager might go to Manila, he joins a team veteran team and will join fellow former PBA players Roger Yap, Riel Cervantes and Marcy Arellano. PBA Hall of Famer and former MVP Philip Cezar is tasked to coach the Roman Ang-owned Manila Stars.

“Mukhang naipit na siya sa Manila eh,” added Lastimosa when asked whether his new squad plans to have David on board.
