Philippines Football League Team of the Week: Weather-proof 11

Philippines Football League Team of The Week

The Philippines Football League had a match-week that experienced torrential rains and gloomy weather on the weekend. In spite of the drab weather condition, it did not damp the desire of the teams to get down and dirty in their quest for the full three points.

Here are the standout players that weathered the weekend storm for a weather-proof 9th edition of Team of the Week.

FORMATION: 4-4-2

Goalkeeper: Toni Doblas (Ceres Negros)

Ceres’ Spanish sentry had been instrumental for his club once again against Kaya in Iloilo.

His biggest highlight in the game was his double save to deny Jovin Bedic and Masanari Omura a late winner in the 90th minute.

Right-back: Darwin Regala (Stallion Laguna)

The former National University standout had a breakout performance against Global Cebu last Sunday after scoring in the 23rd minute that set the tone for his club en-route to a 2-1 win.

Centre-back: Ko Kyung-joon (Stallion Laguna)

Stallion’s Korean defender was a colossus during the win against Global with several successful shutdowns of the opponents’ offensive runs.

Although he was cautioned in the 50th minute off a clumsy challenge, his overall contributions on the defence have been instrumental to the club.

His stellar performance also came off from another productive match previously against JPV last Wednesday where he was able to score a 57th minute goal.

Centre-back: Dennis Villanueva (Davao Aguilas)

Despite the shortened match due to the torrential rain that commenced in the second half, Villanueva has been instrumental in getting his club a clean-sheet against JPV.

Also, he was able to contribute on the offensive end after scoring off a header in the 49th minute for a dominant 3-0 win.

Left-back: Shirmar Felongco (Kaya Iloilo)

Outside of his defensive duties, one of Kaya Iloilo’s hometown heroes has been the biggest literal hero for the match against Ceres by scoring the equaliser in the 88th minute for a 1-1 draw.

Forward/Right-Winger: Patrick Reichelt (Ceres Negros)

Reichelt has been on fire for his club the past two games scoring a goal against Davao Aguilas last Wednesday while laying an assist on Saturday against Kaya.

Central Midfielder: Yannick Tuason (Stallion Laguna)

Stallion’s attacking-midfielder/forward has been one of the creative forces for his club recently, especially against Global Cebu last Sunday.

Aside from his assist for Darwin Regala’s first half strike, he also created a chance for Jesus Melliza.

To add from his assists, he also had his own attempts that posed problems to Global Cebu.

Central Midfielder: Abou Mohamed Sy (Stallion Laguna)

The midfield colossus has been immense with his work-rate getting things happen for his squad especially in creating opportunities for his team to score a goal.

His presence has been integral to Stallion’s recent run of positive results.

Left-Winger/Forward: Mike Ott (Ceres Negros)

Mike Ott scored an important goal for Ceres Negros against chasers Kaya Iloilo in a heated away fixture.

Despite the match ending in a 1-1 draw as Kaya equalised soon after, the result maintained his club’s six-point cushion at the top of the league.

Left-forward/Striker: Phil Younghusband (Davao Aguilas)

Involved in all three goals for his club, Phil Younghusband scored the first goal off a first-half penalty.

He assisted his brother James for the second goal, while initiated the play that led to the third goal.

Right-forward/Striker: James Younghusband (Davao Aguilas)

His goal for Davao off an assist from brother Phil made him notch his 8th goal of the season making him the league top-scorer as of this writing.

He also provided the assist for the third goal that was scored by Dennis Villanueva.
