PVL: BaliPure rallies past Iriga-Navy to open quarterfinals campaign on a high note

The BaliPure-NU Water Defenders pulled off a come from behind victory as they outplayed the Iriga-Navy Lady Oragons in a five-set thriller, 25-17, 18-25, 20-25, 27-25, 18-16, in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference quarterfinals, Saturday at the Flying V Centre in San Juan.

American import Janisa Johnson led the cause for the Water Defenders as she drained 27 markers built from 22 spikes, three blocks and two aces while Alexis Matthews added 19 points.

Michaela Belen and Roselyn Doria provided a much needed support in the offense as they fired 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Macy Ubben and Lauren Whyte were accounted for 55 points combined in a losing effort as the the Lady Oragons stumbled to their seventh straight loss.

After winning the opening frame, BaliPure were silenced in the next two sets as Iriga imports took charge in the scoring duties for the Lady Oragons.

BaliPure woke up just in the tick of time to force a decider as the fans were treated to a cardiac finish with the Babes Castillo-mentored squad prevailing in an extended fifth set.

The Water Defenders – who are coming off a three-game losing streak – exacted revenge from their preliminaries tormentor to join BanKo in the quarterfinals’ opening day victors.
