On The Rise: Lady Tamaraws among the most sought after recruits in the professional ranks

Lady Tamaraws 1

Unnoticed no more.

The University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 80 saw the birth of a new powerhouse in Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws.

After three consecutive years of making it to the semifinals, the ladies in green-and-gold finally reaped the fruits of their labor after making it to the championship round for the first time in nine years.

The Lady Tams might have fallen eventually to defending champs De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers, but the feat was enough for club owners and coaches in local professional leagues to secure the services of the then overlooked players from the Morayta-based squad.

Almost all of the Lady Tamaraws in their recent itineration have cracked their way to the roster of club teams both in the Premier Volleyball League (PSL) and Philippine Super Liga (PSL).

In the current PVL Reinforced Conference, seven Lady Tams are seeing action.

The semifinals-bound PayMaya High Flyers have four FEU players in their roster. Open spiker Jerrili Malabanan and UAAP Season 80 Best Blocker Celine Domingo are both core members of the Roger Gorayeb-mentored squad. Also included in the team are Gel Cayuna and Czarina Carandang.

Tacloban tapped FEU starters Kyle Negrito and Heather Gunio-o to bolster their squad composed mostly of National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) standouts.

Graduating libero Kyla Atienza’s unsung performance surely had Coach Tai Bundit impressed and decided to recruit her for the league-leading Creamline Cool Smashers bannered by Alyssa Valdez.

The upcoming PSL Invitationals will also see four Lady Tams in play.

UAAP Season 80 MVP contender and graduating skipper Bernadeth Pons will make her return to the Petron Blaze Spikers and reunite with former FEU mentor and newly-installed national team head coach Shaq Delos Santos.

Just the previous week, the Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors closed a high-profile recruitment coup and signed Toni Rose Basas, Jeanette Villarreal and and Carlota Hernandez.

The three will join hands with current FEU head coach George Pascua.

With the exposure and experience that the Lady Tamaraws will get in their respective journeys in the professional league, it won’t be surprising if we see the winningest volleyball team in the UAAP get another shot at the championship sooner than later.
