Dominic Thiem reveals why only Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal win Grand Slams

Federer thrashes Albot to go through to Swiss Indoors quarters

Upcoming talent Dominic Thiem believes that though the transition to youth taking over at the top is half complete, the Grand Slams continue to remain in the back pocket of the grand trio.

“The change of generation is half completed, you can already see it in the Masters 1000s where things got balanced,” he said to Standard.

“The only thing we need to do is to win Grand Slams. They are only won by the three. I think seeing a new Grand Slam winner is difficult.”

He also spoke about what makes the top three so difficult to beat.

“Each one for their qualities. They have a lot of experience and they are amazing athletes.”

“I do not think so,” Thiem answered when asked if he would play till 38 years of age like Federer has.

The Austrian also spoke about reducing his tournaments after coming across health issues.

“I am very happy and pleased with my body. Kitzbuhel meant a lot to me. I was at a full power and pressure. Then I got ill.”

When asked if he would prefer winning a Grand Slam or becoming world number one, Thiem replied – “Definitely Grand Slams. It can be my only logical goal.”

Venus Williams reveals what she thinks about Serena Williams as a mother

Federer thrashes Albot to go through to Swiss Indoors quarters

Venus and Serena Williams will probably go down as the greatest sibling pairing in the history of tennis, and the elder of the two, Venus, has now shared some interesting thoughts about her sister.

Venus spoke about how dedicated Serena is since becoming a mother, and that she feeds off her strength.

“What I admire most about her is how dedicated she is, and if I ever become a mom, she showed me how to do it. I think I had these misconceptions that were completely wrong,” Venus said, per Tennis World USA.

“And, incidentally, my mom told me they were wrong — but I don’t think you always listen to your mom. I wouldn’t have been a good mom. So, I’m seeing Serena — the amount of time that she gives her daughter and how close they are, and how much they love each other and how much the daughter loves her.

“It’s definitely something to aspire to. So, she sent me on the straight and narrow”.

Venus also spoke openly about her niece Olympia.

“Honestly, kids love to play, so that’s the best thing you can do. She loves to play,” she said.

“I just got back from China, and I was at the house and I was up early with her, and we just played for hours. She tricks me [in] to doing things that I’m not supposed to do for her. You have to watch everything you do because she spots it and you’re like, ‘Oh no, she can’t forget about this, none of the other.’ So, it’s pretty fun’.

“We’re wiping down all of the surfaces. The hard part though is if you do get sick and you’re like, ‘Oh man, I can’t go see the baby,’ and you put yourself in quarantine. But you’re just like, ‘FaceTime me please.’”

Dimitar Berbatov tells Manchester United to sign Real Madrid superstar

Zidane relaxed about rumours he faces sack as Real Madrid struggle

Dimitar Berbatov may have hung up his boots, but he still has a lot to say about the game of football. He is now out advising Manchester United on whom they can possibly sign.

The Bulgarian discussed the topic of Gareth Bale at Real Madrid, and highlighted that he would be delighted if the Welshman was signed by his former employers.

“It is a difficult situation but he is back playing now, so they must have sorted things out to a point,” Berbatov revealed to Goal. “They must have sat together and fixed it. They both want Madrid to do well.

“For someone like Bale to score so many goals and still not get the recognition and respect because of that, it seems strange to me. They were booing Ronaldo at times in Madrid. I would watch that and think ‘what the f*ck do you want?!’ I’m like… come on guys!

“[Eden] Hazard has had problems, a bit like [Paul] Pogba at United. People think like that. When you cost £100 million, they think you can just dribble from one box to another and score. It puts negative thinking in the fans’ minds.

“Footballers are human beings and it makes them see negative things in their game when they get treated like this.

“He needs to get out if he doesn’t play regularly. I would love to see him at Man Utd if Madrid doesn’t want him. That would be good for him.”

Gareth Bale reveals he is playing with “anger” for Real Madrid and Wales

Zidane relaxed about rumours he faces sack as Real Madrid struggle

Gareth Bale looked set for a move to China in the summer transfer window, but rather surprisingly, ended up staying at Real Madrid after the club blocked his exit.

His publicised war with Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane further fuelled feelings of unrest at the club, but Bale wasn’t allowed to leave Madrid regardless, and despite making an impact during the opening weeks of the new season, is far from a happy man.

During the International break, the Welshman revealed that he is actually playing with anger for both club and country, and that the emotions are high at this time.

“You play with a lot of emotion. Anger comes into it of course, but I haven’t got anything to clear my mind about,” Bale said.

“I try and give my best whether here [with Wales] or in Madrid and I will continue to do that.”

Even his national team coach Ryan Giggs agrees that pressures are present for the former Spurs man.

“Of course, it would have unsettled him because it was apparently very close for him going,” Giggs said.

“But things might have changed. Things do change quite quickly in football and now he’s playing, he’s loved, he’s happy, and I expect him to carry on doing what he’s doing for Real Madrid.

“If Gareth Bale is at your club and he’s training well and he gets the chance to play, he’s always going to keep you interested because he can turn a game on its head, he can score goals and he’s such an asset.”

Juventus star hits out at club for not playing him, Manchester United on high alert

Sarri praises Ronaldo’s “extraordinary” skill and mentality

Juventus are facing the luxury of having a very large squad to choose from, while Manchester United have an obvious dearth of players in their team and are most certainly paying for it.

New Juve boss Maurizio Sarri has made the controversial call of leaving certain names out of his squads for various competitions, and it hasn’t gone down well with those players.

One of those unfortunate stars is Emre Can, who was left out of the club’s UEFA Champions League (UCL) squad, and has now hit out at the Bianconeri for their treatment of him.

“I’m not happy [at Juventus] right now. I don’t play much at the moment,” Can said, as per Goal.

“Last season I played a lot. Especially in important games for Juventus. And I also played well there.

“I haven’t had a chance this season. But now I think, when I come back to the club, I will get chances again.

“I am definitely grateful to Joachim Low [German national team coach]. Because I didn’t play much in the club and he invited me anyway. Nevertheless, he gave me the chance. That’s why I was simply happy that I played again.”

Can continues to be a part of Germany’s plans, but could find a new suitor at club level in the form of Manchester United, who are facing a woeful run of form and could do with the experience of the former Liverpool man in midfield.

Reports: Real Madrid decide main January signing will be UCL finalist

Real Madrid are gradually improving after a questionable start to their new campaign, but believe they need more fire power in their squad if they are to challenge for major trophies.

The January transfer window could hence prove useful for Los Blancos, and the club reportedly has one of their signings for the winter already decided.

Marca are reporting that Madrid want Christian Eriksen to join their ranks in January, as they see the Dane as one of the players who can positively impact their current squad.

The Spanish giants have been linked with Eriksen for a while, and reports suggested he was heading to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, before the move finally fell through.

However, it seems like it could now be reignited, specially with Tottenham Hotspur’s poor start to the new season under Mauricio Pochettino, and question marks over the commitment of players to the club.

Real boss Zinedine Zidane wants to add another midfielder to his ranks, and had initially asked for Paul Pogba to be signed from Manchester United, but may now have to settle for an alternative.

Pogba will not be sold by United for anything lesser than around 160 million euros, while Eriksen would be much cheaper, and could possibly perform an equally good job for the Galacticos.

Gianluigi Buffon says Lionel Messi is like Roger Federer, Cristiano Ronaldo like Rafael Nadal

The heart of the Borussia Dortmund midfield – Axel Witsel

The Juventus goalkeeper recently claimed that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were the Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal of football, and compared the four superstars.

“Federer is infinite class, while Nadal is perseverance, sweat and also talent, otherwise you cannot win all the Grand Slams he achieved,” Buffon said to La Gazzetta Dello Sport.

“Nadal’s hard work and constant desire to improve himself allowed him to be on a par with the most talented tennis player in history.

“The comparison is obvious and makes me smile, as Leo Messi is Federer, while Cristiano Ronaldo is like Nadal.”

He also revealed that his inspiration in sport comes from former F1 driver Alex Zanardi, who had to have his legs amputated following a crash in 2001.

“The top of the list is without doubt Alex Zanardi. Few would’ve got back on their feet, as it were, even without legs. He teaches us the importance of the mind, as that rules everything.

“Even with the difficulties of the disability, having an active mind, creating objectives, that helps you to live life with great enthusiasm.”

Pep Guardiola reveals who is ‘one of the best’ Manchester City signings in history

‘He’s a Spurs player’ – Solskjaer responds to advice that Man Utd should sign Harry Kane

Manchester City got the better of Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) group stages, and manager Pep Guardiola was all praise for one man.

Guardiola stated that Ilkay Gundogan was one of the best signings that City had made, and laid down his importance all around the pitch.

“You cannot believe how good he is,” Guardiola said after the game.

“He is an exceptional player. He can play in different positions, with his work ethic. I missed him a lot in our first year here when after a few months an ACL ruled him out for more than six months.

“He is exceptional. He is one of the best signings in this club’s history.”

The Spaniard then discussed the match itself in a bit of detail.

“We believe when you attack inside and put a ball wide and people arrive for the cross, that’s the best way to score a goal,” he said.

“It was really nice, but they defended so well. Even for the goal the defender was there. They were so good. I didn’t expect them to play so deep, because they didn’t have a shot on target, apart from one or two set pieces.

“But what they did in that part of the pitch was so good. They won duels and anticipated all the time. They deserve a lot of credit. That’s why it was an incredible battle.”

Cristiano Ronaldo sets impressive UCL record after Juventus beat Bayer Leverkusen

‘We’ve found a blueprint’ – Lampard after Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Ajax

Cristiano Ronaldo might already go down as the greatest ever UEFA Champions League (UCL) performer, but just in case, the Portuguese superstar broke yet another record in the tournament.

Ronaldo has now set the record for becoming the player with the most number of wins in the continental competition, overtaking former Real Madrid star Iker Casillas.

Casillas had 104 wins to his name during a legendary spell as goalkeeper, and primarily managed to get those wins while playing in a Real Madrid shirt.

But Ronaldo was on the right side of a 3-0 result in the UCL last night, scoring a goal too as Juventus breezed past Bayer Leverkusen in Turin.

That takes Ronaldo’s UCL match-winning tally to an impressive 105 victories, making him the only player ever to win those many games.

The former Real Madrid man won the tournament with Los Blancos four times in total, while also lifting the famous trophy with Manchester United back in 2008.

Now at Juventus, there is no doubt that Ronaldo is gunning for more glory this season, and just might manage a sixth title soon.

Sergio Ramos explains “joke” reason for Real Madrid draw in UCL

‘We’ve found a blueprint’ – Lampard after Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Ajax

Real Madrid had to scratch and crawl for anything they could find, and just about survived after a disastrous start to their UEFA Champions League (UCL) group stage game against Club Brugge.

Los Blancos went 2-0 down in the first half in front of a shell shocked home crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu, before some inspiration from captain fantastic Sergio Ramos brought them back to life in the second period.

And Ramos isn’t defending his team’s display in the first half either, calling the conceding of the first goal as a “joke”.

“It is a bad result but the reaction was good,” Ramos revealed to Movistar after the clash.

“We cannot be happy – the first goal was a joke. But I am sticking to the positives – the players changed the game with their attitude in the second half.

“In the end it is not that I am happy to add one point – there was room to add three – but I’m happy with the reaction.

“It is not that we started badly, but then we were not concentrating on where the opponent could harm us.

“In the end I want to focus on the last 45 minutes. We can’t be happy but you always have to be thinking about the positive.”

Jose Mourinho reveals his future plans after Manchester United sacking

The heart of the Borussia Dortmund midfield – Axel Witsel

Jose Mourinho has been out of a job since being sacked by Manchester United back in December 2018, and rumours have been rumbling about his return to football management.

The Portuguese himself admitted that he has had plenty of offers to join clubs as their new boss, but hasn’t found the one he feels would be perfect for his managerial career moving forward.

Reports now suggest that the former United and Chelsea head coach is actually eyeing the Real Madrid job, and wants to take over should Zinedine Zidane be sacked.

He recently spoke about his future, and ruled out Italy as a possible destination, sparking further rumours that the Madrid position could be his.

“My future? I don’t think it will be in Italy,” he revealed on Italian TV show Tiki Taka.

“Inter is my home, my family. [Massimo] Moratti is a friend, my president. The story of the treble was fantastic.

“After [the final in] Madrid, if I returned to San Siro to celebrate, I would never leave Inter. When you say goodbye to a family it’s a hard thing to deal with.

“That night I already knew I was leaving, I couldn’t say no to Real Madrid for the third time.”

“Real Madrid was my best experience because of what I learned as a coach, as a man, for the lessons that I took in my career and in my life. It is the best memory of my career, it was fantastic,” Mourinho told Portuguese TV.

With Jose offering some interesting bites of his career during a punditry stint with Sky Sports, it should be intriguing to see where he finally ends up managing once again.

Virgil van Dijk reveals whether Liverpool will win Premier League this season

‘He’s a Spurs player’ – Solskjaer responds to advice that Man Utd should sign Harry Kane

Liverpool have got off to a stunning start in the Premier League, winning seven out of their first seven matches of the campaign, and have a healthy lead at the top of the table.

It is only obvious then that murmurs would begin about the Reds ending their drought in the Premier League, and top players such as Virgil van Dijk would be pivotal to that taking place.

But the Dutchman believes it is way too early to be jumping to conclusions about whether Liverpool win the domestic title this season.

“It doesn’t mean anything [the five-point lead]. It’s far too early. We’re almost in October and the busy period will come.

“There are still so many games left and the only thing we focus on is the game ahead of us. We don’t want to look at the others because there’s no point doing that.

“Everyone realises that as well because last season we saw how it turned quickly. We just want to focus on the game ahead of us.”

“It’s the media who love statistics. The reality is we have nothing at the moment. We want to continue to do well and there’s still plenty of room for improvement,” he added.

“We have to be confident; you have to think you’re going to win every game otherwise you might as well stay at home. We have the quality, we have the players.

“We’ll take this, recover and then prepare for Salzburg (in the Champions League) and that will be a tough game as well. We have to win every game, that’s how it is.”

Mauricio Pochettino reacts to Manchester United transfer rumours

‘He’s a Spurs player’ – Solskjaer responds to advice that Man Utd should sign Harry Kane

Mauricio Pochettino has found life difficult as of late, with Tottenham Hotspur slumping to a poor start to their new Premier League campaign.

A penalty shootout defeat to tiny Colchester Town in the Carabao Cup has further raised speculation that perhaps Pochettino could be heading out of Spurs, and perhaps a bigger club awaits.

Manchester United are suffering their own issues under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and rumors are circulating that ‘Poch’ could be the right man for the job at Old Trafford.

However, the former Southampton manager is in no mood to give up on the North Londoners just yet, and made his future categorically clear, while explaining why Spurs can continue to fight till the very end.

“It’s not like this. I explain why – in football, I suffered two big disappointments,” Pochettino said.

“One when I was a player and there was the penalty at the World Cup. It was always my dream to play in a World Cup, my massive, big dream. OK, we played three games and went home.

“We went there unbeaten, a candidate to win the trophy and went home in the Group stage. I stayed at home and didn’t go out for 10 days.

“Another day was with Tottenham to win a trophy and the closest to win a trophy was of course the Champions League and it was made even bigger because it was the Champions League.

“To achieve the final of the Champions League with Tottenham – no-one expected that. It was more than a dream, more than a dream. In that moment I felt disappointed and then I took a train, after the train, to Barcelona and again you feel like you are depressed.

“In your mind, you expect to move on after a week and say ‘I want to, again, be there.’ You cannot be happy.

“Yes, we have some disagreements, of course. But I am happy now because I am a positive and of course this season is going to another massive challenge. But we must have that energy to try to be contenders and try again to fight for big things and I’m going to try until the end.”
