Defending champion University of the Philippines and Ateneo bested their respective foes to boost their standing in the UAAP Season 80 women’s badminton tournament on Sunday.
The Lady Maroons shut out University of Santo Tomas, 5-0, to tie the Lady Eagles, a 4-1 winner over National University, on top at 2-0 at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
Reigning MVP Poca Alcala, Mary Ann Marañon and Jeline Masongsong provided wins in singles play, while the pairs of Jessie Francisco and Lea Inlayo, and Marina Caculitan and Pauline Santos also contributed for UP.
Ateneo drew strength from its singles players Bianca Carlos and Cassie Lim and the doubles tandems of Carlos and Trixie Malibiran, and Geva de Vera and Chanelle Lunod to prevail.
The Lady Bulldogs, whose lone win came from Jhiselle Capillo as Samantha Ramos retired in the third singles due to injury, suffered their first loss after starting at 2-0.
Adamson University joined NU in third place after a 4-1 conquest of University of the East.
The Tigresses and the Lady Warriors are winless in three starts.
Action resumes on Friday at the same Malate venue.
