Aces Lanz Zafra and Sarah Barredo saw their 2018 SMART National Open Badminton Tournament campaigns go opposite ways last Friday at the Powersmash Badminton Center in Makati City.
Zafra, the country’s top-seeded male shuttler, was booted in the quarterfinals round of the men’s singles division by University of the Philippines’ JM Bernardo, 14-21, 19-21, in a 40-minute match.
On the other hand, no. 1 Filipina shuttler and National University star Sarah Barredo swept the first three rounds without losing a single set to advance to the women’s division finals.
Bernardo’s next challenge will be against Rabie Oba-ob in the semifinals, while Barredo will face unranked Mia Manguilimotan.
Second-seeded Solomon Padiz will take on third-ranked Ros Pedrosa in the other bracket of the men’s division.
Back in the women’s division, rising prospect Mikaela de Guzman took down second-seeded Nicole Albo in the second round to set up a knockout semifinals matchup against third-ranked Jochelle Alvarez.
This tournament is backed by SMART Communications, MVP Sports Foundation, BaliPure, SMASH Pilipinas, Victor PCome Industrial Sales, J.Co Donuts, Prima Pasta, and Forthright Events & Sports Management Inc.
Alvin Morada and Alyssa Leonardo will also duke it out against Jerickson Oba-ob and Mariya Sevilla in the mixed double’s tourney, while UAAP MVP Chanelle Lunod and Christian Bernardo will try to upend Ariel Magnaye and Thea Pomar.
The men’s doubles division will see all four national team duos square off as Christian Bernardo and Anton Cayanan are set to face Joper Escueta and Paul Pantig, while Ariel Magnaye and Alvin Morada will clash against Mike Minuluan and Alem Palmares.
Elsewhere, Alyssa Leonardo and Thea Pomar will go head-to-head against ex-UST Tigress Patricia Barredo and Descka Calimlim in the distaff side. The duo of Kanna Baba and Mariya Sevilla and the tandem of Mikaela de Guzman and Samantha Ramos will meet in the other bracket.
