Slaughter, Kings not taking Chism-less Rain or Shine lightly

Even with a roster that is stacked-up in all positions, Greg Slaughter expects Barangay Ginebra to face stiff opposition come Sunday when the Kings take on an all-Filipino Rain or Shine crew at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Ginebra giant said the Elasto Painters’ spirited performance on Wednesday is a proof that they are no pushovers after seeing ROS gut down a 26-point deficit, before eventually falling short against the Meralco Bolts, 98-95.

“Rain or Shine is just a tough team,” Slaughter told FOX Sports during the GINdependence Day event on Thursday at URBN in Quezon City.

“One thing I observed, even when they had the import (Wayne Chism) and they were down by 26, but when he’s gone, they were able to come back,” he added.

Slaughter warned the Kings that Rain or Shine shouldn’t be taken lightly, being a “well-coached team and one that thrives on team play.”

“That’s definitely not the way we can think about them because that they are not a team that’s not strong when they don’t have an import,” shared the former Ateneo big man, whose team opened the mid-season conference with a 0-2 record.

“They are well coached, talented, and been intact for a long time. It’s got to be tough team with import or not at all.”

Chism, who is in his third PBA tour of duty, tore a muscle on his left hamstring during the early goings of the third quarter against Meralco.

Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao said they are still hoping Chism could respond to treatment, though they are already looking for a replacement as well. – By Richard Dy
