San Miguel Beermen execute game plan to the letter in Alaska rout says Marcio Lassiter

Beating a streaking Alaska squad requires a lot of planning and preparation.

So far, San Miguel Beer sweet-shooting guard Marcio Lassiter said they were able to accomplish both after waylaying the Aces, 116-96 on Wednesday night behind the Beermen’s 17 three-point shots.

“We’ve been working on that (shooting) because we know we’re gonna have (to contend with Alaska’s) big guys who can post up,” Lassiter said after the game.

The 6-2 Lassiter accounted for 3 of the team’s 17 threes, before import Tyler Wilkerson, Arwind Santos and Alex Cabagnot made an avalanche of baskets from beyond the arc in the 2nd half to turn the game into a 1-sided contest.

Lassiter said since slotman June Mar Fajardo is out of commission due to a right knee injury, it is imperative for the Beermen to knock down their shots from the outside to negate the Aces’ strong inside game.

“We stepped up nice and we did it,” said Lassiter, a member of the Gilas national pool.

“We had pretty big threes that pretty opened up the game for us.”

On the other hand, Fil-American playmaker Chris Ross said they came into the game wanting to get back on the winning track after wasting a 19-point lead and losing to Rain or Shine, 108-105 last week.

“We knew that starting with Rain or Shine, we’ll have a tough 4-game stretch for us, with ROS, Alaska, Star and Ginebra,” he said.

“We have a goal and we don’t want to lose back-to-back games. We were locked in and came to play,” added the 6-foot Ross, the 2016 Philippine Cup Finals, who finished the game with 14 points and 12 assists.

The Beermen will take an 11-game respite before returning to action on Easter Sunday against the Hotshots giving June Mar Fajardo enough time to recover from a knee injury. – By Richard Dy
