Rain or Shine Elasto Painters finally solved the San Miguel mystery as they cruised to a 124-99 emphatic Game 4 victory Sunday night at the Big Dome and returned to the Finals of the 2016 Oppo-PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Paul Lee picked the perfect time to peak since his return from a knee injury as he finished with 18 points and 5 assists leading the Elasto Painters in closing out the series, 3 games to one.
Their first series win over San Miguel after 2 failed attempts in the playoffs since last year gave them a shot at winning the franchise’s 2nd title, which they failed to do against Tropang TNT in 7 games last season.
Pierre-Henderson Niles put up a double-double effort of 15 markers and 14 boards while Gabe Norwood and Christ Tiu also came through with 15 and 13, respectively.
AZ Reid, who was battling jetlag and 3 months removed from active competition, groped for form finishing with 25 points on 31 attempts. The 2-time PBA Best Import, who will suit up for the Beermen anew next conference, though added 17 rebounds and 5 assists.
Marcio Lassiter fired 20 points while Alex Cabagnot piled up 18 points 8 assists in the one-sided affair.
The 5th seed Rain or Shine also became the lowest seed to enter the Finals since 6th seed San Mig Coffee (Star) did it in 2014.
Coincidentally though, the last time a coach beat both Ginebra and San Miguel in a back-to-back playoff series was also none other than Guiao, who was at the helm of Red Bull in the 2006 Philippine Cup.
