LaDontae Henton excited to team up with Calvin Abueva

Alaska import LaDontae Henton can’t wait to play alongside the “Beast” Calvin Abueva.

Henton said he’s heard a lot about Alaska’s energetic forward since arriving last month in Manila.

“I can’t wait to start playing with him (Abueva). I heard a lot of good things about him, and he seems like a good guy,” Henton told FOX Sports, shortly after the Aces’ Tuesday afternoon practice at the Gatorade Hoops Center.

The bearded Alaska import’s wish though will take a while as coach Alex Compton planned to give a long break for Abueva, who has played non-stop basketball since last year due to his Gilas Pilipinas duties.

Henton believes he and Abueva will bring the same energy on the court.

“That’s what I’ve been known for, always been an energy player, the guy who can rebound and score the basketball,” he said.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to help the team win because I’m an energy guy.”

However, Compton said he wouldn’t want to play Henton on Sunday against Meralco in their first game in the PBA Governors Cup if the former Providence standout’s ankle.

“It’s a sprained ankle, so he’s not playing yet. He can’t practice yet, but we’ll see. We started last conference without an import and I don’t know if we’ll have one for the first game or not, but players get injured so we have to deal with it,” said Compton.

Henton though insisted that nothing’s serious with his injury since results from his MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and X-ray were negative to any damage.

“I should be good to go. I got back at the court today (Tueday), doing a lot of moving and quick cutting,” said the 24-year-old Henton, who sprained his ankle last week in the Aces’ 106-92 loss to the Meralco Bolts in a tuneup game. – By Richard Dy
