In a bizarre turn of event, University of Santo Tomas playmaker Jamil Sheriff has been cleared to play in the UAAP Season 79 men’s basketball tournament at the 11th hour.
Sheriff will start on Sunday in UST’s opening against Ateneo. No less than Sheriff himself broke the news to FOX Sports.
“They (UAAP) had a final board meeting kanina. UST appealed my case and parang they went back to the old rules when the UAAP used to start in July so they based it on that na lang,” the outgoing UST senior said.
The 5-foot-7 Sheriff, a Fil-Canadian guard, turned 25 years old last July 21. He was deemed ineligible on Wednesday since an existing league rule states that a “student-athlete should not be older than 24 years by July 31”, the usual start of the UAAP calendar.
But a reversal of the decision came as a pleasant surprise to the host school, which is still reeling from the departure of its “Big Three” composed of Kevin Ferrer, Ed Daquioag and Karim Abdul. – By John Chester Fajardo
