Though joining his seventh team in the PBA, veteran guard Mike Cortez couldn’t hide his excitement as he reunites with his former La Salle teammate and coach at GlobalPort.
Traded by Blackwater in exchange for wingman Ronald Pascual on Thursday, Cortez has been reconnected with Joseph Yeo.
Cortez and Yeo once formed a two-headed beast for the Green Archers way back 2001 in the UAAP. And the “Cool Cat” plans to revive it at GlobalPort.
“We decided to be part of the Splash Brothers (of GlobalPort). Hopefully, we can make some noise towards the end of this conference,” Cortez told FOX Sports as he watched over his new team on Saturday in practice.
He also took the time to reconnect with GlobalPort active consultant Franz Pumaren, who was his coach back in their days at La Salle.
“They still see something in me that the other team didn’t, so I just hope to come in and contribute. But right know, I just want to fit in,” said the 13-year Fil-Am playmaker.
Cortez, though, is doubtful in the Batang Pier’s last two crucial games in the elimination as he is still recovering from a delicate calf injury.
“Still rehabilitating and strengthening, maybe another week hopefully. It’s the kind of injury where you can’t really tell when is the right time to come back,” he said. – Jason Mercene
