Elijah Millsap powers SMB past NLEX to return to semis

Denver’s Murray hails Jokic partnership after NBA play-off win

Elijah Millsap continued to play with a mission while getting solid local support down the stretch as defending champion San Miguel Beermen survived Henry Walker’s 45-point explosion and advanced to the semifinals of the 2016 PBA Governors Cup with a 114-110 win over NLEX Road Warriors Friday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Millsap played brilliant all throughout, leading the Beermen’s breakaway in the stretch and sealing the victory with two free throws. The comebacking import finished with 37 points and 11 rebounds to counter Walker’s 45-point, 16-rebound effort.

“We will not win the championship if we will not improve our defense.  This is a good lesson for us. I’m also happy to see Elijah, there were some moments he wanted to take charge. He’s okay, he’s willing,” said SMB coach Leo Austria.

The younger brother of Atlanta Hawks’ Paul Millsap completed an And-1 play to break a 100-all deadlock while June Mar Fajardo, Alex Cabagnot and Marcio Lassiter came through in the clutch to score the big victory that secured them a return trip to the semis.

The Road Warriors went down fighting with Jonas Villanueva hitting a three-pointer with three seconds left to give the Beermen a big scare.

All five starters scored in double figures for the Beermen with Fajardo emerging as the best local with another double-double output (17 points, 10 rebounds).
