Star makes anticipated change, names Chito Victolero as new coach

New season, new coach for the Star Hotshots.

Coming off a woeful nine-win performance in the 41st PBA season, Star tapped former Mahindra assistant coach Chito Victolero as its new mentor, succeeding Jason Webb.

“Pinakilala ko na kanina si Chito sa team sa practice,” Star governor Rene Pardo confirmed to FOX Sports on Friday morning.

Pardo said he has seen how Victolero works, particularly during his time with Mahindra that saw the two-tear-old franchise beat the Star as well in last season’s Commissioner’s Cup with hulking Import Peter John Ramos in tow.

“It (Mahindra) shows the quality of his coaching dahil natalo pa niya kami,” he said, while mentioning that Webb will assume the position of team consultant.

Victolero’s addition is just one of the many changes the Hotshots are set to undergo as they prepare for next season that starts on Nov. 20.

On Thursday, Star shocked its legion of fans when it traded long-time face of the franchise James Yap to Rain or Shine in exchange for combo guard Paul Lee.

The trade ended Yap’s 12-year tenure with the Purefoods franchise.
Pardo assured fans that the Yap trade and the entry of Victolero will just be the tip of the iceberg.

“Marami pa yang kasunod (changes) just to shown how dead serious we are in the team kasi di naman kami pwedeng nasa ilalim lagi,” he stressed. – Richard Dy
