Three-time MVP June Mar Fajardo vows to stay hungry, wants to win more PBA titles

Three-time MVP June Mar Fajardo plans to have a short vacation in his hometown at Pinamungajan, Cebu before hitting the ground running for San Miguel’s title defense bid in the Philippine Cup next season.

“Uwi sa Cebu, and pahinga ng ilang araw then balik ulit sa practice,” said Fajardo, moments after receiving MVP to become the first PBA player to win the top individual award three straight years.

Fajardo’s homecoming next week will also serve as a celebration after coming up big anew in the annual Leo Awards where the Cebuano pride took home three trophies.

The 6-foot-10 behemoth received his second straight Samboy Lim Sportsmanship Award, a Mythical First team member nod, before collecting a record third consecutive MVP plum.

He joins an elite club that includes William “Bogs” Adornado, Ramon Fernandez and Alvin Patrimonio, who won three or more MVPs.

But once he returns to Manila, Fajardo will be all business in preparing for the upcoming season.

“Kailangan namin mag-regroup, kailangan magpractice ng mabuti kung ano yung mga naging mali namin this season. Kailangan namin iimprove next season,” he said.

The 2012 first overall pick vows to stay hungry, while hoping he can give the Beermen more championships than just collecting individual accolades.

“Di ko nga inakalang makakakuha ng tatlong sunod na MVP. Ano lang ba ako dati? Hindi nga ako mahilig sa basketball. Nakakatuwa lang,” he said.

Asked what will change after another award-filled season in just his fourth year as a pro, Fajardp responded: “Blessing rin ‘to. Di mo ‘to kailangan ilagay sa ulo mo, kailangan mo to i-keep sa (puso) mo hindi sa ulo,” he said. – Jason Mercene
