San Beda Red Cubs head coach JB Sison described his young floor facilitator Evan Nelle as a “true point guard” after their capping this week by ruling the 2017 National Basketball Training Center championship Thursday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
In the Red Cubs’ very first NBTC title, Nelle made sure he had his moment, punctuating the championship round with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals to earn the Finals MVP award.
“Ikaw ba MVP ngayon? Di ko alam,” Sison said, drawing laughters from media men when asked what his thoughts are about Nelle’s achievement.
But in all honesty, Sison said he wasn’t even aware of the award because the Red Cubs put premium on team basketball.
But he reserved the praises on his prized playmaker.
“He’s always steady. ‘Yung decision making nya, nag-mature na talaga. He knows who to find, he knows where to give the ball at the right time, tsaka yung dictate ng pace. He’s a true point guard,” shared Sison.
Sison also praised the Red Cubs, citing their massive improvement in two years’ time. The same group won the NCAA juniors and Palarong Pambansa titles last year.
“Proud of the boys kasi nag-start ‘tong group na ‘to division 2, imagine nag-level up tapos nag-champion.”
Next stop for the Red Cubs are the Filoil Flying V off season basketball tournament and the Palarong Pambansa next month.
