A rejuvenated James Yap made sure Rain or Shine will open its title defense on a winning note as the Elasto Painters reasserted their mastery over their former coach Yeng Guiao and NLEX, 113-105 in the main game of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup opening day at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
- Vintage form by Big Game James: James Yap played his best game so far in a Rain or Shine jersey as he exploded for a season-high 26 points, including 2 triples in the dying minutes to deny NLEX of an upset. His output equalled his highest production in the last three years.
- ROS got NLEX’s number: Caloy Garcia and the Elasto Painters are now 2-0 in their head-to-head against former coach Yeng Guiao and the Road Warriors.
- Import battle: Wayne Chism, a former Elasto Painters import, did much of the lifting on offense after finishing with 27 points and 21 rebounds for his new team NLEX. Rain or Shine’s Shawn Taggart on the other hand, still churned out 23 points and 10 boards for the reigning champion.
- Quote of the match: “We can’t have anymore excuses after what happened last conference.” – head coach Caloy Garcia
