James Yap says 10,000-point club can wait as ROS reign ends in loss to Star

After coming up with another paltry performance in Rain or Shine’s quick quarterfinals exit, 2-time league MVP James Yap much-anticipated induction as a member of the prestigious 10,000-point club will have to wait until the Governors’ Cup.

Just 27 points short of reaching the 10,000 points club heading to the playoffs, Yap could have easily achieved the feat in the quarterfinals.

The 6-2 Yap though had a forgettable playoffs debut against his former team after scoring just 8 points as Rain or Shine suffered a 0-2 series loss to Star.

Finishing with just 5 points in Game 1, the 14-time All-Star’s shooting slump continued on Wednesday, chipping in only 3 as former Star backcourt teammate PJ Simon made life difficult for him in the game.

But Yap insisted reaching the new milestone in his career is fartherst from his mind with plenty of games still in the offing in the third conference where he can earn the distinction as the only active player in the elite list.

“Honestly hindi ko talaga iniisip yun (10,000 points),” said Yap, shortly after Rain or Shine saw its title reign in the Commissioner’s Cup end with an 84-69 loss on Wednesday. “Basta darating na lang yun kung darating di ba? Hindi ko iniisip yun. Hindi natin nakuha this quarterfinals, meron pa namang next conference eh so baka dun na lang.”

Facing his former team Star in a playoff match for the first time since the blockbuster trade in the offseason, Yap has yet to lead Rain or Shine to a breakthrough victory against the Hotshots. Yap is now 0-4 against Star this season.

Yap, though, denied any frustrations mounting over his current team’s losing skid to Star.

“Wala naman eh,” he said. “Basta alam mo sa sarili mo na binigay mo yung best mo, kahit anong mangyari kung talo, talo talaga. Kung talo ka, iisipin mo na lang na binigay mo yung best mo so walang pagsisisi.”

But the 35-year-old Yap is eager to bounce back in the Governors’ Cup and hopefully, contribute to Rain or Shine’s title bid.

“Lagi na lang kaming quarterfinals, baka naman next conference mag-improve kami, maging semis naman di ba? Tignan natin, basta hard work and yung disiplina hindi mawawala, kumpiyansa pa rin. Ganun lang naman eh.”
