This year’s Gilas roster for the Southeast Asian Games may not be laden with veteran players from the PBA, but Chot Reyes’ choices aren’t lacking in experience in the biennial cage joust scheduled this August 19-31 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Bannering the team are former UAAP stars Kiefer Ravena and Bobby Ray Parks, TNT forward Troy Rosario, PBA rookies Kevin Ferrer, Carl Cruz, Mike Tolomia and Von Pessumal, vastly-improved Meralco guard Baser Amer, ex-Blackwater guard Almond Vosotros, former FEU banger Raymar Jose and Fil-German Christian Standhardinger.
“We wanted to make sure to see the guys first before we make the final decision like I told the team earlier,” Reyes said, shortly after Gilas’ practice Tuesday night.
While Ravena and Parks are experienced in the biennial games, Reyes said he’s still open to tweak the roster should the need arises.
“We had to submit something to beat the deadline but there’s always a possibility of changes,” added the outspoken mentor.
Reyes also noted that the 6-7 Standhardinger has long been in their radar ever since the Fil-German big man played for Nebraska and later, Hawaii.
“We’ve seen him,” Reyes said of Standhardinger, who played in Germany’s pro league the past few years. “Ilang beses na siya nagpunta dito, not with this group but we know how he plays. We’ve been monitoring him.”
