Isaiah Austin carried the load for Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas as the national squad salvaged fifth place behind its 89-79 win over Mono Vampire in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup on Saturday at the Chenzhou Sports Center in Chenzhou Hunan, China.
- Monster effort: The 7-2 Austin was at his absolute best at the close of the Philippine team’s campaign in China, finishing with all-around numbers of 37 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 blocks.
- Charging Mono Vampire: Former PBA import Mike Singletary led Mono Vampire’s late-game charge after scoring a team-best 30 points. The American reinforcement’s 3-point shot heading to the final 2 minutes shoved the Thai club to within 79-83. But Kiefer Ravena knocked down a jumper, before knocking down two more free throws to eventually seal the outcome.
- Bad shooting from the 3-point arc: Chooks Pilipinas, playing less than 24 hours after beating Al Ahli-UAE, went just 3-of-23 from beyond the arc. But the Filipinos more than made up for their lackluster effort from the three-point zone with their 61 percent shooting from the two-point zone (34-of-55). Chooks defeated Mono Vampire, 115-102 during the preliminaries last Sunday.
- Solid support: Ravena scored 18 points, Jett Manuel added 13, while Raymar Jose and Carl Bryan Cruz chipped in 8 and 7, respectively.
