University of the Philippines kicked off the second round with a narrow 71-69 victory over winless University of Santo Tomas in their UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball match on Wednesday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
- Hot from 3-point distance: Felix Jaboneta went hot from downtown after going 4-of-4 to lead UP with 12 points. Jun Manzo added 11 while Paul Desiderio bucked a bad shooting night to finish with 10, along with 5 rebounds and 5 assists.
- Revitalized Final 4 hopes: The win halted UP’s three-game slide to improve to an even 4-4 record as the Fighting Maroons stepped up their Final 4 bid in the beginning of the second round.
- Still winless: The loss meantime, dropped the Growling Tigers to 0-8 as the Espana-based squad continued its woeful showing this season under second-year coach Boy Sablan.
