La Salle survives gritty stand from FEU, punches 6th win in UAAP

La Salle survived a tough stand from Far Eastern University to hammer out a cliffhanging 75-73 win in the main game of the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball tournament Wednesday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

  • Cardiac finish: La Salle led by as many as 13 points in the third period, before FEU made its own late-game run in the final quarter. A three-pointer by Hubert Cani and later, a basket by Prince Orizu got the Tamaraws to within 73-74. Ricci Rivero then canned his first free throw off a foul by Ken Tuffin, before being called for a violation on his second attempt. But Andrei Caracut preserved the win by intercepting Ron Dennison’s inbound pass as DLSU escapes with the win.

  • 1-2 punch: Rivero finished with 20 points, 5 steals and 4 assists, while Ben Mbala added 18 and 17 boards for the Green Archers.
