Lyceum overpowers JRU, moves a win away from sweep of elims

Djokovic plays down nerves over recent form

Lyceum of the Philippines University showed its championship form aa it waylaid a surprisingly listless Jose Rizal, 100-63 on Friday to move on the cusp of sweeping its way to the finals in the 93rd NCAA basketball tournament at the Filoil Arena in San Juan City.

CJ Perez flashed his MVP form again after unloading 24 points, eight boards, four assists and four steals to be at the forefront of the Pirates’ relentless attack to overwhelm the Bombers. Lyceum nailed its 17th straight win, to move within one victory from booking an outright finals stint where the former will enjoy a thrice-to-beat incentive.

The last barrier to that sweep bid though would be a formidable one as LPU faces defending champion San Beda, which edged Letran, 73-68, earlier. The Lyceum-San Beda could be a sneak preview of this year’s finale.

Interestingly, the 17 wins matched the number of triumphs LPU compiled the past three seasons.

And the Pirates did it against Jose Rizal, the league’s best defensive team, losing by a mere average margin of 2.38 points.

It was a total show of championship form for LPU, which rode on an unrelenting attack that eventually took its toll on JRU, which fell to 11-7.
