TEAM Makati is now building up its squad for the second conference of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.

This early, head coach Cholo Vilanueva had already laid out the team’s blue print of putting up a fast pace, pressing squad, a philosophy which he has inherited from his old coach, Franz Pumaren, who loves to employ the run, jump and switch system during college.

“We’re trying to build a competitive team. We want to get players who are a god fit to our system, fast pace, pressing team. We’re going to have a competitive yet, exciting team in the MPBL next conference,” Villanueva told

According to Villanueva, they’ve now done the initial steps of becoming a new member squad.

As for the team, they’ve started doing their recruitment process.

“We’ve visited different areas in Makati and we are searching for homegrown players,” said Villanueva, who will be handling his first head coaching job in the men’s division.

He has served as an assistant coach to Vergel Meneses at Jose Rizal University and as deputy to coach Franz Pumaren at GlobalPort in the PBA.

But Vilanueva is looking forward to make a good impression in his debut and he is determined to assemble the best possible roster he could form out there to go up against the heavyweights in this fledgling league put up by Senator Manny Pacquiao with former PBA MVP Kenneth Duremdes serving as commissioner.

“We’re aware that we can field in five ex-pros, so we would like to take advantage of that. Right now, we’ve been talking to several players and we’re confident we can bring them in,” added Villanueva.
