Through his sizzling debut for the Marikina Shoemasters, Yves Sazon paced his squad to an 88-81 win in the first game of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League – Anta Datu Cup.
His 33 points on six treys and 10 boards proved to be too much to handle for the GenSan Warriors. Renato Ular notched a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds while Erwin Sta. Maria chipped in 18 points.
The Shoemasters started strong in the first half, featuring a 14-1 run in the second quarter, ending the first half with a score of 49-33.
However, a 14-0 run was engineered by Chris Masaglang to start the second half, as the Warriors tried to keep it close. He notched a total of 17 markers and grabbed 12 rebounds.
But Yves Sazon’s timely baskets in the fourth quarter put this game away for good.
Leomar Losentes, John Orbeta, and Delmar Mahaling provided meaningful minutes for the Warriors by scoring 18, 15, and 10, respectively.
-Delmar Mahaling had the highest +/- in the game at +20, illustrating his importance on the floor for the Warriors. His toughness and hustle is surely a welcome addition for GenSan.
-On the other hand, former PBA draftee Ervic Vijandre logged the lowest +/- in the game at -20. Expect him to bounce back in the upcoming games.
-Runs made by the Shoemasters and Warriors were brought by their defensive schemes. Midway in the second quarter, Marikina employed a 2-3 zone defense, while GenSan used the press in key parts of the third quarter.
-Look out for GenSan native Chris Masaglang. His heady playmaking and pull up midrange jumper is something to look out for if you’re the opponent.
– Marikina big men were instrumental to Sazon’s hot outside shooting as they provided good screens for him. For sure, opponents would have a rough time chasing him around multiple screens.
-Key acquisitions in Jackson Corpuz and Gerald Anderson were unable to play for Marikina.
