BOCAUE – Netherlands buried Perlas Pilipinas with a flurry of shots from downtown to hand them their first loss of the FIBA 3×3 World Cup, 21-11, at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.
A two-pointer from Jacobine Klerx pushed the world number four’s lead up to 12-4, but Perlas then unleashed a short 6-1 burst to come to within three, 13-10.
Back-to-back twos from Karin Kujit, however, put the game out of reach for the Filipinas.
Kujit top-scored for Netherlands with eight points, all coming from the two-point area. Klerx added six.
“We went head-to-head with them, but they’re more experienced and that’s one thing we lack. That’s why I always say that exposure’s always the best way to win in this kind of level,” head coach Pat Aquino said.
Janine Pontejos paced the Philippines with six. Afril Bernardino chipped in four points.
The Netherlands was able to exploit their shooting advantage as they knocked down eight from beyond the arc. Klerx (four two-pointers), Loyce Bettonvil (one) and Sharon Beld (one) were all able to convert.
Only Pontejos (two twos) was able to make a bucket from downtown for Perlas.
“Their shots were going in and when the shots are going in, sometimes we lose focus, the momentum, everything. I hope we change those things and get back in the next game,” Aquino added.
Perlas will try to bounce back later when they face Germany at 6:40 pm.
