To be the champ, you have to beat the champ.
That’s exactly what’s in store for the Meralco Bolts as they will be sharing the same bracket with Al Riyadi of Lebanon in the 2018 Fiba Asia Champions Cup in Nonthaburi, Thailand.
After accepting the opportunity to represent the country in lieu of the San Miguel Beermen, the coach Norman Black-mentored squad will try its luck against seven of the best club teams in the entire region.
Aside from the two-time titlist Lebanese team, Meralco will also have to get past the Alvark Tokyo, who is also coming off a title of their own in Japan’s B. League. The team is mentored by master tactician Luka Pavicevic of Montenegro.
The Bolts will also tussle with a somewhat familiar foe, as Asean Basektball League regulars and this year’s hosts Mono Vampires of Thailand is also in Group B.
The competition, meanwhile, will be even fiercer in Group A, with local league champions Liaoning Flying Leopards (China), SK Knights (Korea), Pauian Archiland (Chinese-Taipei), and Petrochimi from Iran figuring in a quest to rule the bracket.
The FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2018 will commence on September 27 to October 2 at Stadium29.
As of writing, Meralco is still in search of it’s second import to compliment the bruising Allen Durham.
