BOCAUE – Almost.
Perlas Pilipinas faltered on multiple opportunities to steal a win from Germany and fell, 12-10, to suffer their second loss in Pool D of the FIBA 3×3 World Cup at the Philippine Arena.
Back-to-back baskets from Gemma Miranda pulled the Philippines to within one, 11-10, but they were unable to capitalize on chances to even things up with over a minute to go after getting hit with a shot clock violation.
After Luana Rodefeld banked a jumper for a two-point lead, Janine Pontejos saw enough daylight to put up two straight attempts from downtown, but she couldn’t convert on any of those.
Perlas had two more tries from Pontejos and Afril Bernardino but to no avail.
“I’m just very happy for the girls, even though we lost. I felt that we could be in that level, and we could play in that level again, and that we could compete with other European countries,” head coach Pat Aquino said.
“Sayang, minalas lang konti.”
“We really need more of this experience. We’ve been into championships, but this is different. We’re up against the world,” Jack Animam said.

Bernardino scored all of her six points consecutively right when the Philippines had a dry spell and when Germany looked to pull away.
Miranda had two points, while Pontejos and Animam had a point apiece.
Laura Zdravevska and Wiebke Burns each had four points for Germany, who bounced back from their opening loss against Spain.
