Pampanga gets added firepower by nabbing Riel Cervantes; Marlon Gomez returns

Looks like the Pampanga Lanterns will become an even more explosive team in the coming MPBL season.

The Lanterns acquired the services of veteran forward Riel Cervantes while also welcoming the return of frontliner Marlon Gomez as they prepare for next season’s cage wars.

Cervantes posted on his Facebook account that he is officially joining Pampanga and this was confirmed even more by new head coach Bong Ramos.

“Yes, it’s true, he’s joining our team along with Marlon Gomez,” Ramos told FOX PH in a telephone interview.

FOX Sports Philippines reported earlier that Cervantes is headed to Zamboanga-Family’s Brand Sardines.

Roman Ang, team owner of the Manila Stars, the squad which Cervantes played for previously, facilitated the player’s transfer to Zamboanga, but the team failed to come to terms with the veteran cager.

Cervantes immediately called up Ramos, his old coach in the PBA and Blackwater, and his entry to the Lanterns was finalized.

“He was excited to join me in Pampanga, so when he committed, I made room for him,” added Ramos.

According to Ramos, he would maximize the full potential of Cervantes, who can both play as a small forward or a stretch four in the MPBL.

Gomez, who originally played for Pampanga, but was traded to Navotas for Levi Hernandez midway the elimination round of the Datu Cup, will once again provide the inside presence the team lacked.
