HOME ARE THE HEROES | San Juan Knights get warm welcome from local folks after winning MPBL title

“We did what we were supposed to do on our home floor.” says Lowry after the Raptors beat the Bucks

SIXTEEN hours after capturing the first ever national championship of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup, the members of the San Juan Knights returned home like conquering heroes.

In front of the local folks who gathered to welcome the heroes, the Knights conducted a motorcade and were greeted by their throng of fans who loved and adulated the squad ever since when they were competing in the MBA, the precursor of the MPBL.

“Grabe. Amazing. Sobrang nakakawala ng pagod. Grabe talaga fans ng San Juan since MBA days until now. It’s worth it,” wrote team executive Chris Conwi.

The Knights rewrote history by winning the national championship of a major regional basketball event.

Nearly two decades ago, the Knights were able to bag the MBA National Championship.

Several members of the team are still part of that illustrious cast of the Year 2000 — Randy Alcantara, Gherome Ejercito, and former Senator Jinggoy Estrada.

Alcantara, a former guard of that 2000 squad, is now the head coach of the new breed Knights while Ejercito serves as an assistant coach.

Estrada is still one of the owners of the team.

“Natuwa nga Si Senator Manny Pacquiao. Nag-video call kami, nakita niya all players, including Senator Jinggoy nasa motorcade sinasalubong ng mga tao na sobrang tuwa. Nakita buong San Juan Knights dala yong golden trophy,” added Conwi.
