BARANGAY Ginebra legend Jayjay Helterbrand joined the Imus Bandera’s practice just recently and this is a sign that the former PBA MVP is likely headed to play in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
This development was confirmed to FOX Sports Philippines no less than head coach Budds Reyes.
Reyes, however, is not privy whether the ex-star point guard of the country’s most popular team has already inked an agreement with the Bandera.
“He joined our practice, that’s true,” Reyes said in a telephone interview. “But we’re not sure yet whether he has already signed up or he’s going to play now for our team.”
Helterbrand was not in practice on Thursday afternoon, but Reyes and the rest of the team are hoping the PBA legend could join their roster.
“He looks great, magaling pa rin talaga,” added Reyes. “He provides not only inspiration, but also leadership. Championship caliber talaga siya.”
Should Helterbrand signs up with the squad, he’ll be the first former PBA MVP to play in the fastest growing regional amateur basketball league put up by Senator Manny Pacquiao and PBA MVP-legend Kenneth Duremdes, who serves as commissioner.
“If this is true, it’s huge for us, especially for Imus’ fans. It will also be a big impact to all MPBL players na nagi-idolize kay Jayjay and will also be a big boost to our growing number of fans,” wrote Duremdes in an online message.
