Former PBA MVP Jayjay Helterbrand, celebrity baller Gerald Anderson and the rest of the Imus Bandera, as well as last season’s runner-up, Davao Occidental Tigers, are being requested by the organizers to headline the MPBL’s first overseas games to be held on September 27 and 28 in Dubai.
League commissioner Kenneth Duremdes confirmed the news to FOX Sports Philippines.
“The organizers wanted Imus and Davao Occidental and we’re still waiting for the third team, pina-finalize pa yung third team,” said Duremdes.
Imus has become one of the most well-followed squads in the fastest growing regional amateur basketball league in the country following the key acquisitions it made in the off season.
Helterbrand, one of the legends who played for Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the PBA, and Anderson, who immediately became the face of the league when he joined the Marikina Shoemasters last season, were the two attractions of the team.
Davao Occidental, on the other hand, has a solid Mindanaoan fan base — many of them are now based in Dubai –the biggest and most populous city in the United Arab Emirates.
The organizer in Dubai DJMC, which was also responsible in staging the concert of Filipino performer Arnel Pineda, formalized the agreement with Commissioner Duremdes and league officials on Saturday, to bring the games to the UAE.
The games are expected to be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
