BIÑAN — Pasay drew solid contributions from its new recruits but turned to its holdovers when push came to shove in outlasting Navotas, 70-68, in the MPBL Season 3 at the Alonte Sports Arena here Monday night.
Ron Lastimosa led the way with 14 points, including the go-ahead three-point basket with 1:14 left that gave the Voyagers a 69-67 lead.
The Unipak Sardines-backed Navotas squad had several chances. Ryan Buenafe missed a three-point shot, which allowed Jan Jamon to split his charities at the other end.
Kojac Melegrito missed a potential three-point play when he drove to the basket and got fouled by Raymond Ilagan. Melegrito made the first charity shot, then muffed the second. He got his own missed shot and after two more passed, Navotas found a wide open Allan Evangelista at the corner. However, he missed a potential game-tying jumper that could have sent the game to overtime.
It was a big win for Pasay, which rewarded new coach Keith Martin his first career coaching win in the MPBL. He took over the coaching reins from veteran mentor Cholo Martin in the off season.
“I’m thankful because binigyan ako ng Pasay ng ganitong opportunity,” said Martin. “It’s a challenge for me and I’m really excited on how I will apply my system. I’m very happy kasi very supportive yung Pasay team. I’m excited kasi wino-work out talaga ng mga players yung system.”
Two other players also tallied 14 points apiece for the Voyagers — Dhon Reverente and Jamon — while another newcomer, Achie Iñigo, added 10.
