The Bicol Volcanoes and the Parañaque Patriots completed a night of surprise in the MPBL Season 3 on Wednesday night at the Valenzuela Astrodome.
Ex-PBA player Ronjay Buenafe and former Quezon City stalwart Alwyn Alday proved to be a dreaded one-two punch for the Volcanoes, which stunned powerhouse Pampanga Lanterns, 82-70.
Buenafe drilled 20 points on six-of-13 shooting from the field while Alday contributed 15 markers as the Volcanoes completed an upset win over one of the considered contenders in the tournament put up by Senator Manny Pacquiao with PBA legend and former MVP Kenneth Duremdes serving as commissioner.
Another former PBA player, Alex Nuyles, added 10 markers for the Volcanoes, which drew 55 points from their bench players, 32 more than their rivals.
Parañaque, meanwhile, made it a twin kill for the less heralded squads as the Patriots stunned home team Valenzuela Classic, 89-83, in the other game.
Returning Jemal Vizcarra knocked 27 points, including five triples to lead the way for the Patriots while Dwight Saguiguit tallied 17.
Vizcarra and Saguiguit combined forces on offense, but the rest of the squad concentrated on making stops, allowing the Patriots to come back from 20 points down, 66-46, before completing a victory.
“Ten days pa lang kami together as a team. Nagpa-tryout kami, pero ito lang dumating. Nakita mo kung paano dumepensa yung mga bata. Ako, admittedly, hindi ko na kaya yun, pero yung mga bata, kaya talaga nila,” added Vizcarra.
Parañaque’s win spoiled a 29-point output by Chris de Chavez, who hit an all-time record nine three-point shots.
Both teams combined for 25 three-point shots, also an all-time record.
