Gen San Warriors buck absence of ace player Mike Williams to snap Valenzuela Classic’s MPBL win run

Barcelona maintain their push for the play-offs with a 80-74 win at Fenerbahce

NO Mike Williams, no problem for the General Santos City Warriors.

Four players, led by ex-pro Rob Celiz, finished in double figures for the Burlington-supported Warriors, who fashioned out a 93-87 triumph over host team Valenzuela Classic in the MPBL Lakan Season at the Valenzuela Astrodome.

Celiz, one of the new recruits of the Warriors this season, drilled in 25 points to lead the way for his squad, which posted its second straight win and snapped the Classic’s four-game winning streak.

General Santos City improved its win-loss record to 4-2. Following the loss, Valenzuela absorbed its second defeat in six matches.

Pamboy Raymundo finished with a double-double performance of 14 points and 12 assists while John Orbeta contributed 12 markers. Meylan Landicho scored 10 for Gen San, which shot 49-percent from the field (35-of-71) and hit a steady 12-of-23 from beyond the arc (52-percent).

Head coach Rich Alvarez, who had won two games in as many matches as mentor, couldn’t be more proud with his wards’ accomplishment despite missing the services of their ace player.

“Mike Williams wasn’t with us today, but the guys stepped up, as a team,” Alvarez told FOX Sports Philippines in an exclusive interview. “They all wanted this and that’s huge.”

Williams is one of the few MPBL players seeing action for Mighty Sports, the country’s representative to the William Jones Cup.

“Si Mike Williams talaga yung scorer namin before this game, kinausap kami ni Coach sa practice na mag-step up kaming lahat. Sinuwerte lang ako na I’m making the baskets. Naging aggressive lang ako sa game,” added Celiz.
