BATANGAS CITY — The Basilan Steel picked a perfect time to get back on the winning track and played their most productive game of the season.
On Tuesday, the Steel produced their franchise best for most points scored in a single game and in the process, gave the Clutch a sound beating, 113-94, in the MPBL Lakan Season at the Batangas City Coliseum here.
The Jumbo Plastic backed-Basilan simply displayed an overpowering performance against Navotas. The Steel hit a team-best 60-percent shooting form the field (48-of-79) compared to the Clutch’s 45-percent (31-of-68).
Basilan also had a staggering advantage in points from the paint, 78, to Navotas’ 34. The Steel’s bench production was also simply too much over the Clutch, 63-45.
Head coach Jerson Cabiltes said he wasn’t aware that his squad was able to set the record, but admitted there was a conscious effort on their part to attack the shaded area.
“We know that they don’t have a rim protector, so we attacked the basket more. We were shooting high because of our inside scoring,” Cabiltes told FOX Sports Philippines in a telephone interview.
Leading the way for the Steel is Gab Dagangon, who drilled in 20 markers while ex-pro Arvi Bringas stepped up and finished with a double-double performance of 19 points and 12 boards.
Chris Dumapig tallied 17 points while Hesed Gabo also wound up with a double-double showing of 12 points and 13 assists for the Steel, who improved their win-loss record to 7-4 and kept a hold of the solo fourth spot of the southern division of this tournament put up by Senator Manny Pacquiao with PBA legend and former MVP Kenneth Duremdes serving as commissioner.
