BIÑAN CITY — Byron Villarias did a LeBron James impersonation. Jamil Ortuoste exploded and hit eight triples.
Their breakout performance Wednesday night were enough to carry the Bataan Risers and the Muntinlupa Cagers to separate victories in the MPBL Lakan Season at the Alonte Sports Arena.
Villarias came away with a triple-double performance as he finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists and his brilliant all-around game sparked the Risers’ 79-73 victory over the Quezon City Capitals.
Alfred Batino and Joe Presbitero each ended up with 16 markers to provide Villarias the much needed support in offense, allowing Bataan to hit 46-percent from the field (29-of-62). Quezon City shot only 36-percent (27-of-75).
With the win, Bataan moved up to eighth spot of the tough northern division by picking up its 12th win in 20 games. The Risers had overtaken the Caloocan Supremos, who edged the Marikina Shoemasters, 76-74, in the other game.
The Supremos’ 12th win in 21 games put the squad just half a game behind the Risers.
Like Villarias, Ortuoste also had an explosive night, hitting eight three-point shots on his way to scoring a career-high 27 points in Muntinlupa’s 85-76 win over the Mindoro Tamaraws.
The lefty, deadly guard proved to be the thorn the Tamaraws couldn’t remove.
Muntinlupa improved its record to 5-15, but coach Bonnie Garcia and his troops will have a lot of catching up to do with 10 more games left in their elimination round schedule.
