MAC Cardona has played in the PBA for many years, winning a championship for TNT in the 2008-09 season and becoming a scoring champion multiple times.
With his PBA career over, the former stalwart of the La Salle Green Archers has found a new home with the San Juan Knights, one among the teams participating as an expansion club in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
Cardona is one among the few ex-PBA players in the line up, joining John Wilson, formerly of Ginebra San Miguel, veteran forward Larry Rodriguez, former Star Hotshots swingman Samboy de Leon and bruising forward Jam Cortes, who previously played for Phoenix.
San Juan was one among the previous members of the MBA, the precursor of the MPBL, and won the title in 2000 with cage great Philip Cezar at the helm.
Cardona is aware of the team’s rich winning legacy and he wants to help the team reach its goal in its return to glory.
But more than the championship, Cardona has one ultimate goal.
“Gusto kong matulungan ang mga teammates ko na makapasok sa PBA,” Cardona told FOX Sports Philippines in a telephone interview.
On Monday, the Knights had their tune up game against the NU Bulldogs and won handily with Cardona and Wilson carrying the brunt of the offense.
Cardona went six-for-six from the field, proof that he’s back in game shape.
“Nagpakundisyon talaga ako. Tumaba ako, pero nag-double time ako sa workout, kasi dito sa bahay may gym rin kasi,” added Cardona.
With the MPBL still barely a month from now, Cardona and the Knights could only get better in preparing for the expanded season that could last for nearly a year.
