The Classic eked out an 87-82 win in a tune-up game against a selection team Sunday night at the THOA Court, Valenzuela.
Led by the solid playmaking of team captain Paulo Hubalde and the hot shooting of Rocky Acidre, the hometown team was able turn a 15-point deficit to a five-point win.
Their opponents, on the other hand, were anchored on the offense of former UST Growling Tiger Karim Abdul.
Head coach Chris Gavina was pleased with what his wards did to close the game.
“The guys shot a lot of grit especially considering we went against (Karim) Abdul and that 7-footer over there.”
Trailing by two-points in the last minute of the game, Gavina called a timeout to calm down his team.
“You know I told my guys to stick to our system, to stick to who we are specially on the defensive end.”
They then went on a 7-0 burst to close the game.
Hubalde applauded their bench who held their ground when the starters went out for extended minutes.
“Nag-step up ‘yung mga teammates ko, particularly yung mga galing sa bench,” he said. “Ayun naman ang gusto natin eh — we play as a team, we win as a team.”
The Classic are looking to improve on their semifinals finish in the next season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
