‘PLAY for the name on your chest.’
That’s how long-time basketball executive Buddy Encarnado urged the players of the Bataan Strikers, the newest squad competing in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
The former Sta. Lucia Realtors team executive is now calling the shots for the Strikers, supported by the city government of Bacoor headed Mayor Lani Mercado-Revilla and Congressman Strike Revilla.
Encarnado told media during the launching of the squad that he will not hesitate taking out the under performing who won’t live up to the expectations of the people of Bacoor.
“I will not hesitate taking out any of the players if they don’t perform and live up to the expectations of the people of Bacoor,” said Encarnado. “I encouraged all the players, forget whatever personalities you have, but play for the name on your chest. You’re carrying Bacoor now.”
“We vowed that the city will be well-represented. You’re going to see a well-disciplined, tough and competitive Bacoor team in the MPBL.”
The Strikers will be headed by PBA legend Marlou Aquino, former Rookie of the Year and three-time PBA champion. He will be backed up by several more ex-pros — Chris Sumalinog, Mikee Reyes and Gab Banal — along with Fil-foreign player Leo De Vera.
Coaching the team is Budds Reyes, former mentor of the San Beda Red Lions and Foton Toplander in the PCBL.
Mayor Revilla is excited to become the latest member of the MPBL, the fastest growing regional basketball league, and hopes the team could contend well.
“We’re excited. We’re the last team to join the MPBL, but hopefully, not the least,” added Mayor Revilla.
