SAN Juan didn’t disappoint its hometown crowd which packed the Filoil Flying V Arena on Wednesday night.
The Go-For-Gold-backed Knights dumped the Pasay Voyagers, 89-66, to stay unbeaten in the MPBL Datu Cup and grab the solo lead in the northern division of this event put up by Senator Manny Pacquiao with PBA legend and former league MVP Kenneth Duremdes serving as commissioner.
Mike Ayon Ayon finished with 16 points while ex-PBA cager John Wilson had a double-double performance of 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Knights also got 10 points apiece from Aaron Jeruta and Lester Reyes.
The Knights posted their biggest lead at 26 points, 87-61, inside the last two-minute mark off a basket by Samboy de Leon, but as early as the first period, the Randy Alcantara-mentored squad was able to establish its own game and went trouble free in coaching to its third win in as many games.
“Ang gusto namin huwag naming pahiyain yung mga taga-San Juan. Matagal na nila itong hinihintay, yung pagbabalik ng San Juan Knights,” said Alcantara, who was then a player for the Knights when thye last won the championship in the MBA in Year 2000.
“Sabi ko lang sa mga players, enjoy natin yung game, but at the same time, kailangan dumidepensa tayo at andun pa rin tayo sa sistema. Kung ano yung klaseng depensang ibibigay sa atin, kailangang ready tayo.”
The Voyagers absorbed their second loss in three games.
True to its promise, San Juan did its job on the defensive end, holding Pasay to only 33-percent shooting from the field (18-of-54). The Knights shot 42-percent (33-of-78).
San Juan also displayed its deep bench as the Knights’ reserve outscored their counterparts, 53-31.
