GREG Slaughter is one among the pride of the University of Visayas Lancers, a dominant team in the CESAFI at the time when he was playing there.
But the Barangay Ginebra star center is taking notice of two former teammates in college who are making waves in the MPBL Datu Cup.
The seven-foot slotman is talking about guard Von Lanete and big man Rino Berame.
“They’re two of the best teammates I had before,” Slaughter told FOX Sports Philippines in an exclusive interview.
“We played together in 2009, my third year in UV. Von is a great shooter, unselfish. He works so hard, he’s disciplined and I love how he plays. We won a couple of championships there in Cebu.”
Slaughter added that Lanete and Berame took some time off from basketball as they have embarked on different careers, but it would only be a matter of time before they get themselves to peak forn.
“Absolutely, they will be better. They had taken some time off from basketball, but once they get into peak form, they will be better. These guys had good chemistry together,” added Slaughter.
Lanete’s elder brother, Chico, a member of the multi-titled San Miguel Beermen, already had a fruitful career in the PBA. Another sibling who had already established a career in the pro ranks is Garvo, now playing for the Meralco Bolts.
For Chico, it’s never too late for his younger brother to pursue a career in the pro ranks, but getting there depends on him.
“Depende sa kanya yun, pero sa tingin ko, oo hindi pa huli ang lahat para sa kanya,” added the elder Lanete. “May chance siya. Good luck sa kanya at pagbutihin niya yung paglalaro niya.
According to Chico, it was only in social media that he learned his brother was on a comeback trail in basketball.
“Nabasa ko lang sa Twitter. Sabi nga maglalaro daw siya sa Zamboanga, so tinawagan ko siya agad,” added Chico. “Pero ang maganda kasi kay Von, hindi siya tumigil sa paglalaro kasi kahit nung may career na siya, naglalaro-laro pa rin siya sa mga inter-companies kaya halos hindi siya nawala sa condition.”
