SOUTHERN teams in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League are now beginning to take notice of the Zamboanga Valientes, the hottest team in their region.
On Wednesday night, the Family’s Brand Sardines-supported squad ran roughshod over the Navotas Clutch, 89-78, to notch their third straight win in the MPBL Datu Cup at the Blue Eagle Gym in Ateneo.
It was the fourth win in six games for the Valientes, who drew another solid game from ex-pro Reed Juntilla, while three others also produced double-digit outputs.
Juntilla led the way with a double-double effort of 29 points and 11 rebounds. He had a steady 13-of-18 shooting from the field.
Former Kia stalwart Jonathan Parreno added 16 markers while Noy Javier chipped in 12 and ex-pro Leo Avenido contributed 10 for the Valientes, who broke free from a tight first half and turned the tables in the third period where they outscored their rivals, 23-12.
Team manager Alvin Munio is happy to see the Valientes becoming the hottest team in the southern region. Zamboanga is one among the five teams from the Visayas and Mindanao, and they were drawing tremendous support from the Zamboangueños, who put up a giant screen back home to watch the team play.
If the Valientes are sizzling, the Clutch are running out of control at this juncture.
After two early wins, Navotas lost three in a row.
