AS early as college, JJay Alejandro showed that he had the makings of a star.
It didn’t take long for the cerebral guard from National University to jump into the PBA — this after being part of the champion teams of the Bulldogs in the UAAP, the Southeast Asian Games while playing for Gilas, and becoming a star combo guard for the Bataan Risers-Zetapro in the MPBL Datu Cup.
Alejandro’s name was high on the list as he was mentioned in the same breath as CJ Perez and Ray Parks when it came to being selected early and true enough, he was picked in the first round by Rain or Shine, which is coached by Caloy Garcia.
The 5-foot-11 guard was selected eighth overall by the Elasto Painters, two picks later than fellow rookie Javee Mocon, whom Rain or Shine selected as the sixth pick.
But for Garcia, there’s a better reason why he selected Alejandro.
“He’s a possible replacement for Chris Tiu. I’ve seen him played in the UAAP and he was definitely good. He was able to hone his skills more while playing in the MPBL, but he has a lot to prove once he plays in the PBA,” Garcia told FOX PH.
Tiu has hinted plans of retiring and although there’s no official word yet, Garcia is already preparing for the possible eventuality.
