FACING a nine-man Basilan Steel on Wednesday night, the Quezon City Capitals capitalized on their advantage and settled for a 74-68 victory in the MPBL Datu Cup at the Navotas Sports Complex.
John Tayongtong broke out of slump and finished with 18 points to lead the way for the Capitals, who improved their win-loss record to 10-10 and temporarily assumed sixth spot of the northern division of this tournament put up by Senator Manny Pacquiao with PBA legend and former MVP Kenneth Duremdes serving as commissioner.
Jay Collado added 14 markers while Hesed Gabo and Alwin Alday added 12 and 10, respectively.
The Capitals forced the Steel to commit 19 turnovers, which led to 21 turnover points. Quezon City also had more points from the paint, 46-30, as well as more production from its bench, 56-20.
The short handed Steel were led by Jhaps Bautista and Cris Dumapig, who had 15 points apiece.
