Erwin Sta. Maria went a rebound away from a double-double performance to power the Marikina Shoemasters to a crucial 71-69 win over the Pasay Voyagers in the MPBL Datu Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Sta. Maria, an ex-pro, finished with 21 points and nine rebounds as the Shoemasters picked up their eighth win in 22 games.
Following their latest win, the Shoemasters ended up in a tie for 10th to 11th spots with the Paranaque Patriots-F2 Logistics in the southern division of this tournament also being supported by LGR, the official outfitter of the MPBL.
The Shoemasters are still very much in contention although they face a tough task of wining their remaining games in hope of catching the last bus to the quarterfinal round.
Renato Ular added 15 points while guard Ryan Costelo contributed 11 markers on top of eight boards and five assists.
Celebrity baller Gerald Anderson had eight points and two steals and continued to become a key contributor for the Shoemasters.
The loss was the third straight for the Voyagers, who fell to 7-17 slate to kiss their playoffs bid goodbye.
