DAVAO Occicdental has pulled away in the standings of the southern division of the MPBL Datu Cup, but the race for the top two has remained as tight as expected in the closing stretch of the elimination round.
Three teams had ended up tied after Wednesday night’s results that saw Muntinlupa dropping to 14-10 and ending up in a tie with Batangas City and General Santos City, which defeated Mandaluyong earlier.
Thanks to Davao Occiental, Batangas City is now in second place of the southern division by virtue of a superior quotient.
Pending the outcome of their last games, a lot of interesting things could happen ahead of the playoffs.
Batangas City, the league’s inaugural staging champion, could formalize its hold of the No.2 spot of the southern division with a win against General Santos City on Monday.
The Athletics could secure the No.2 spot with a win against the Warriors regardless of the outcome of the Cagers’ last game against the Navotas Clutch, the match that had to be played the last 1:34 of regulation.
Muntinlupa and Navotas played late last year, but the match had to be halted as the Navotas Sports Complex was ruled out not playable due to a broken rim.
With still 1:34 left, Muntinlupa leads, 98-95, and the match will have to be resumed anytime soon.
